In certain areas, an abnormal number of migratory birds die in power lines because they cannot realize the earthing cables as obstacle. In cooperation with nature conservation organizations and the power line operators the installation of bird protection marks started in 2005 to defuse most the accident-prone areas.
These are fluttering strips of plastic that are placed at a distance of 25 meters at the earthing cable and increase the visibility of the line for migratory birds. Studies have shown that this measure has decreased the number of dead animals in each area by an average of 90%.
